Veneers are ultra-thin shells of ceramic (porcelain) or a composite resin material, which are bonded to the front portion of teeth. This procedure requires little or no anesthesia and can be the ideal choice for improving the appearance of the front teeth. Veneers are excellent for masking discoloration of the teeth, brightening the color, and for altering the shape or look of the teeth.
Veneers can be a good alternative to crowns. They are particularly good for masking discolored fillings in front teeth. Patients with gaps between their front teeth or teeth that are chipped or worn may consider veneers. Generally, veneers last for many years.
The Procedure
Each tooth is contoured to allow for optimal placement of the porcelain veneer. Dr. Meyers then takes a mold of the teeth. This impression is sent to a dental laboratory which manufactures custom designed veneers. In most cases a temporary or interim veneer is placed on each tooth until the permanent ones are ready. The permanent veneers are cemented into place approximately 3 weeks later.
